During this process the skin is treated with Na₂S and calcium hydroxide in order to de-hair the skin, eliminate the epidermis and partially saponify the natural fats in the hide.

De-hairing hides	Compared to other de-hairing chemicals Solvay Sodium Sulphide reacts very strongly and rapidly. In addition Solvay Sodium Sulphide is an effective de-hairing agent with a low iron content, thus avoiding unwanted brown spots in the skin after liming.
